Meet our Head of Talent & Development

Rob Gilbride, our Head of Talent and Development, oversees all things apprenticeships and early careers. He works closely with organisations such as Proactive Young People CIC, MK Community Foundation and other local organisations and schools, engaging in a multitude of activities to help support people at the early stages of their IT careers. You may have met him at school events, employability sessions or job shows around the local area as he and some of his team are often out and about meeting with students and prospective apprentices.

As well as this, Rob is an Ambassador with the UK Government's South East Apprenticeship Ambassador Network (SEAAN). This means he backs and engages with various essential stakeholders like young individuals, educational institutions, employers, and industry associations across Milton Keynes and the South East. He also promotes apprenticeships through marketing, publicity, and events while also mentoring and supporting employers new to hiring apprentices.

Rob has been in the IT industry for over 40 years now and has worked in a variety of technical roles himself, including Service Desk, Field Engineering and for the past 25 years in managerial roles. What do our apprenticeships entail?

ICT Apprenticeships

Typically, a Level 3 ICT Apprenticeship takes around 18 months to complete. Most of our apprentices work directly on the IT service desk assisting clients with queries and issues relating to their IT. Some apprentices work in our Builds team, physically and technically configuring devices for end users. We also have some individuals working in our User Administration team, setting up accounts for end users.

Our apprenticeship scheme works this way as we want our apprentices to feel they can rotate and try different areas, as the world of technology is so broad and sometimes the best way to gain an understanding of it is by getting involved and working within specific areas; this way you can work out which area works best for you.

Cyber Security Apprenticeships

At Bluecube, currently, our cyber apprenticeships begin at level 4 and are likely to take around 2 years to complete. They work slightly differently from the ICT apprenticeships as there are different strands within the role that you can choose, depending on the paths they want to go on.

Our cyber security apprentices work in the SOC team along with all our other cyber security professionals; currently, our apprentices are working under the cyber defend and respond path in the cyber security technologist role which is more focused on the efforts made to protect and defend individuals and businesses against attacks. This typically involves things like designing incident response plans and reports and supporting the wider team in their work. There are more proactive paths to choose from; this depends on the current landscape, what you would like to do and also the needs of the SOC team.

Bluecube's apprentices gain...

Accredited qualifications

Upon completion, you will gain a nationally recognised and accredited qualification alongside full QA training. We support you through the Level 3 qualification, and if you’d like to further your education, we can support you all the way through to Level 7 (Masters-level).

Soft skills training

We have an in-house trainer that provides our apprentices with ongoing soft skills training which covers interpersonal skills, telephone skills, communication, teamwork and more.

Microsoft certifications

As well as the usual apprenticeship training, we invest and cover the costs of Microsoft certifications. To begin with, these typically start with MS900 and AZ900, but we can support you with where you want to go and if you would like to progress further.

DiSC training

DiSC stands for Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness; the four main personality profiles outlined in the DiSC model and assessment. We provide in-house DiSC training that allows our apprentices to gain a deeper and better understanding of themselves and others.

Emotional intelligence training

We also provide emotional intelligence training for all our apprentices. Why is this important? It allows us to better understand one another and also increases self-awareness. Also, it provides an integral foundation for our engineers working on our service desk, as well as helping them function within a large company.

Where an IT apprenticeship could take your career...

For our ICT and cyber security apprentices, the career opportunities and chances for progression are endless.

Typical job roles after completion of an ICT apprentice include an IT Service Desk Engineer (with a progression/ training plan and salary guide to moving from 1st Line, 2nd Line to 3rd Line), or roles within cyber security and crisis response, UAM and Builds, On-Site Client Support and, in the future, the potential to move into Projects.

For cyber security apprentices, there are a variety of potential roles that could be taken within the SOC team; a lot of this will depend on the path chosen to take and also the cyber security landscape and needs at that time. The SOC team (Security Operations Centre) consists of a variety of talented individuals such as cyber security analysts and engineers, cyber compliance analysts and threat analysts. The team is ever-growing meaning the opportunities are endless and due to the variations available within the Cyber Security Apprenticeship, you can likely steer this in the direction you want to explore.
